I have loved making jewellery since I was a teenager

I have loved making and wearing jewellery since I was a teenager. The very tactile experience of making them, the endless ways it can be made, the great joy of making wearable art for both myself and others. I love the feeling of jewellery against my skin, how it accentuates my features, the playfulness and beauty of it and I love what it awakens in me: happiness and strength. A sense of being regal; a feeling of being in power. Not over someone else or something else, but of myself; the love and strength to hold my own. To feel beautiful, for me.

I make my jewellery with that same wish for you. That you will be in your power and embrace your playfulness and beauty, that you feel love and respect for yourself and your journey, where ever that might be. That you will be your own powerful and loving Hallitsija, which means ruler or sovereign in Finnish.

Why Hallitsija?

When I was 16 I asked my fierce Finnish mom to help me with finding a nickname for me that I could use online, because I couldn’t come up with one. She thought for a brief moment and then she said “Hallitsija” and smiled. Hallitsija means ruler or sovereign in Finnish. The name resonated with me, being a teenager that needed all the support possible to dare to navigate the world in my own way, so I started to using it. And I never stopped using it. So when I thought about what name I wanted to use for my jewellery, Hallitsija felt like the perfect choice.

From my hEart,

for your joy

I make my jewellery primarily of natural materials and all jewellery made of natural materials will change over time. Brass that is left untouched will develop a layer of tarnish over time, wood will change colour and the surface of stones and gems will change as you wear it. I invite you to love your jewellery as it changes and clean your jewellery if you want to restore some of its polish.

Brass

Brass is an alloy of copper and zink. It is resistant to corrosion, including galvanic corrosion from saltwater. Brass can leave a green residue on your skin which is caused by the oxidation. It’s simply a copper carbonate residue that is left on the skin.

Gems/gemstones

The vast majority of gems are minerals that have been chosen for their beauty and durability, then cut and polished. Certain rocks (like lapis lazuli) and organic material (like pearls and amber) are often counted as gemstones as well.

Copper & 925 silver

Copper is a red-orange metal that darkens to a brown color as it is exposed to air. If it is exposed to air and water, it will form a verdigris of blue-green. 925 silver means it consists of 92.5% silver mixed with copper or some other metal. It tarnishes and darkens over time.

Wood & feathers

The wooden beads in my creations comes from all kinds of different wood and the feathers comes primarily from roosters.

Waxed linen & elastics

I use waxed linen cord for some of the necklaces and high quality elastics for the bracelets.

Crystal & glass

Glass and crystal beads all have different names and production methods. The main component of glass however is silica (sand quartz), lime and soda or potash. Glass beads tend to be lightweight while crystal beads are often heavier.
